There is nothing more frustrating for a truck driver than being stranded on the side of the road in the middle of winter. Even if you’ve perfectly maintained and winterized your truck there is always a chance you could find yourself in dangerous freezing temps. Your best defense is a well-stocked emergency kit. Here’s some essentials:

 For the Driver:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Bottle Water (3 days’ worth)
  • Nonperishable food (3 days’ worth)
  • Road Flares
  • First Aid items-Band-Aids, ace bandage, aspirin, ect.
  • Hand cranked radio
  • Chemical Hand Warmers

For the Truck:
  • Extra Antifreeze
  • Spare Chains
  • Spare Fuel Filter
  • Set of tools
  • Recovery straps or tow chains

A Healthier You - Running (5ks, 10ks, and more)

We are just rolling into Fall and with that you start to see all the inspirational post from your circle about running 5ks, 10ks, half-marathons and marathons. This is, after all, the beginning of race season for runners. Maybe after a few “Wow, I never dreamed that person would be a runner” moments you find yourself inspired to lace up and head out for a good, hard run only to wake up the next day with muscles that feel angry and heavy. Hello lactic acid buildup!

This soreness is usually enough of a deterrent to keep you from wanting to go on that second run but in reality it just means you need to do a little more planning before you head out again.

  • Drink water! A hydrated body can break down lactic acid better.
  • Slow your roll!! Don’t try to hit your high school track record on your first run if you haven’t ran in years. Ease in then gradually increase your speed and distance over several months.
  • Breathe Deep. It takes lots of oxygen to convert glucose into energy. As your body learns to use oxygen more efficiently your body will slow down production of lactic acid.
  • Stretch! Warm up your muscles before your run with some dynamic stretches then follow up your run with some good long stretches.

Don’t let a bit of post-workout soreness stop you from becoming a healthier you!

You can do this!

A Healthier You - Stay Safe Shopping

Normally we cover some kind of health tip this time each week but with holiday shopping season coming up I thought this would be the best time to cover ways to stay safe as you bounce from store to store. Each year we hear the stories of people getting mugged, attacked, or even worse as they do their gift shopping.

There are some steps you can take to keep yourself from being a soft-target for the bad guys:

  • Try to shop during the day but if you must shop at night don’t shop alone.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry as this makes you a target.
  • Keep cash in your front pocket or don’t carry cash at all. Opt for check or credit cards instead.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. This impairs your vision and motion if you need to fight or run.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings especially when walking back to and loading packages into your car.
  • With all the large crowds and confusion in stores it’s safest to leave small children with a sitter while you’re shopping.

A bit of vigilance on your part can help you stay off a criminal’s radar and sailing through all your holiday shopping. Stay safe everyone!
